Alternative Ability Generation system

I'm thinking of using this system to generate characters for my next campaign. Its fast and simple:

Player receives +6 in ability bonuses he can distribute as he wishes. Negative penalties to abilties can be taken to raise the value of other bonuses at the rate of 1 for 1, but total bonuses can never exceed +6.
Exemple : 17 (+3) / 15 (+2) / 10 (+0) / 13 (+1) / 13 (+1) / 09 (-1) = +6 in bonuses.

That could work and there are several systems that use that premise to build their characters.

In many ways it's exactly the same as the point buy system currently... just easier to use...

The biggest question is what are you going to do with the odd scores?

Personally I'm fond* of 2d8+2 reroll ones. That gives a range of 6~18 so the worries of getting a 3~5 are gone. The average is 12.

*If a point buy system isn't in use.
